Kindergarten and preschool arts and crafts should actually be educational:
Sounds conforming and traditional?..... its not
You may think that art or crafts or arts and crafts should just be fun for the kids and maybe tie into the preschool or kindergarten curriculum.
And you may be right on both counts.
However we have found the following over many years
|
If you are NOT happy with those realities and are ready for a change....then read on.
So......are you ready to stop doing boring, traditional arts and crafts in your kindergarten or preschool classroom?
Do you want to know why you are stuck in the world of traditional arts and crafts?
It’s very possibly because many of us adults feel they can’t do anything in art like
"I can't draw a straight line" or “I’m no good in art”
which all come from OUR OWN bad experiences in art as a child.
We’ve gotten stuck on doing copycat, follow my model arts and crafts that is very detrimental to children because we don’t know any better..
And its time for us to remove these rigid, overly structured supposed art projects from out classrooms
Most kids don't have those blocks of ours YET unless we ruin it for them and will ruin it for them if we continue turning to copycat crafts by giving them an endless supply of crafts to follow for every holiday or event.
ALL children have inherent, artistic ability that is waiting to blossom but not only that, it’s been proven that good art, developmentally appropriate art or as I call it Educational Art helps children develop crucial basic developmental skills so vital for their growth.
.
What should REALLY be included in every preschool art project to make them truly educational and teach the children to think, solve problems and be creative through art?
#1-Every art project should be one that can be done by any age child, with any level of ability, with minimal instruction.
#2- Art projects should be set up to allow children to think and solve problems
#3- Art should be a vehicle for children's self esteem to flourish
#4-Art should foster creativity.
#5-And though not an absolute prerequisite, wonderful activities can be done with minimal cost
If your projects don't meet these criteria it may be time to reexamine the results of traditional arts and crafts
Are you ready for a change?
Don’t let what happened to this educator happen to you
A woman I know, a real educator was getting on in years and had quit full time preschool teaching. She was asked one day to substitute in a second grade classroom.....
She decided she was going to give these children a bit of extracurricular activity as she felt bad for them sitting so quietly at their desks all day. So as a former preschool teacher she decided to give them an art activity.
She prepared all of the materials and being a progressive teacher did not have a specific idea of what the art should look like when finished and told the children as much. She had one child help her hand out the materials and quite satisfied with herself sat back down to do some of her own work. She told them to begin and lost herself in her work.
A few minutes later she realized the classroom was extra silent and she gave a quick glance up.....Every child was sitting in their seat, not moving...
They were frozen!
"What's wrong", she asked them in alarm. "Is everything OK?"
"Well!" a few of them answered timidly
"YOU DIDN'T SHOW US WHAT TO DO!"
They were absolutely helpless.
The teacher started asking questions and realized that these children were the victims of the classic ARTS & CRAFTS syndrome. All throughout their preschool years the only art they ever did was by copying a model of the teacher or a specific crafts project that had everyone’s basically looking the same.
These pre school arts and crafts projects had taught the children....
#1-They were incapable of creating on their own
#2-The teachers ideas would always be better than theirs
#3-They could not be trusted to think for themselves
Their self esteem was so damaged that they were scared to do something that might be WRONG!
In the forward of an art book for children that I was reading the woman writing the forward described an experience she had as a youngster in art class.
Each child was given a chance to come up to the front of the class to paint.
Her assignment was to paint some trees, so using the black paint that was nearby she made the trunks black as she’d seen them on a rainy day. The whole class laughed at her and the teacher told her that the class was laughing because real trunks are brown.
The woman who was then a child was mortified and never painted again.
This teacher had taught the class that there was only one way to make anything leaving a child’s self esteem so crushed who never did art again, aside from what it did to her general confidence..
This is not an uncommon problem.
So why do so many teachers fall into doing these traditional arts and crafts projects?
I have a few ideas why, tell me if you agree with my analysis
- Many teachers feel they must give in to uneducated parents demand for projects
- Other like the structure and the control these projects give them.
A select few would love to change but don't' know how. They don't realize how easy it really is and how much satisfaction they and their students would get out of doing Educational art. They think it’s either structured preschool crafts projects or the alternative is a little collage and maybe some finger painting.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Faige Kobre
I am a former preschool teacher and director with a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education.
I am definitely one of those people who suffered from an overly structured preschool program. I am a very creative person with a definite block and so I make up for my deficit by teaching teachers and parents how to tap into every child's creativity so that they will grow up to be thinking, independent, creative, self starters. (Or at least enter elementary school that way)
I created this guide to help any preschool teacher or director that wants something better for her students,This guide is good for traditional teachers, progressive teachers, Montessori teachers, teachers that do the project approach, the Waldorf approach and even the Emillio Reggio approach..
This guide is good for new and experienced teachers as it takes you on a journey in a step by step fashion/ how to set up and run the most wonderful non crafts, progressive, Educational Art program.
Below are some actual quotes from some initial testers of my guide.
I would like you to know that I have been in education since 1969 and I have never seen anything so good before. I am so highly impressed with what you have put together I couldn’t wait to call you to let you know we have started implementing some of these changes and you must come down and see the changes in our school. The teachers have been doing the most amazing art with the children. We have set up an art day for the parents to come join and see their children artwork. You will be so proud of what we’ve done

The teachers in our school are so amazed at the creations the children have been working on especially collages like torn paper collages. These are children that never had free art before. We absolutely love it. We use the guide at staff meetings and take many wonderful ideas from it.
Lakie Silber Teacher in Skokie Illinois
"I find you information extremely helpful. The information is presented clearly and there are lots of great ideas and extension on those ideas. The materials you suggest are easily accessible and your ideas are very open ended and the children are not copying something the teacher has made.

Okay, so how much do you think this will this cost you
Lets just imagine taking a standard ART for teachers course in your college curriculum. A required course. Youd have to read some basic texts on art theory if you can get through them at all then you’d spend your days in the course actually doing various art activities that are appropriate for young children.
At least that’s what I did in graduate school.
But you will still be expected to pay at least $200-$300 per credit. Considering that each course is around 3 credits that leaves you with a bill of around $600-$900 and that’s in a cheap college. In a school like Bank Street it will be closer to $2000 a course.
Now remember the amount of information listed that is packed into this guide to Educational Art. ...and we can easily say there is at least about $500-$700 worth of information in it if not more.
But I do know that teachers are not at the high end of the pay scale and I really want teachers everywhere to be able to afford this and don’t want any preschool teachers to be without this indispensable guide. What a dream to have teachers all over the world giving children the experience of Educational Art.
So I'll tell you what I was able to do for you
$87 was the price we were initially selling it for...
