Dear Fellow Parent and Educator,

Can I assume if you reading this, that you have been looking for crafts activities for your children or students?

You may be a teacher and need a crafts activity for a holiday, maybe you’re a home school mom needing to give your kids a break,  or  maybe you are just looking to spend  quality time with your children.

I’ll bet you’ve come across  at least one of these problems when looking for crafts!

  •    You can’t seem to find crafts that are good for all ages.
  •    The materials discussed in the activities are hard to find.
  •    There seems to be very little creativity in the crafts.
  •    Directions are often quite complicated for your tired brain.
  •   It takes too long to prepare and set up.
  •    Lots of the crafts seem to have a cheesy assembly.

And to make matters worse once you do go through the bother of digging good crafts this is what you get from the children.
  • “Did I do this right”
  • “I don’t know what to do”
  • ”What do I do now?”
  • “I can’t do this”
  • “I’m not good at this”
  • “Hers is better than mine”
  • “Mines ugly”
  • “I hate art”
  • “Can I watch T.V.?”
If any of these comments are familiar to you than you are not alone.

If not, and you are happy with the crafts you find online  then stop reading right now.

BUT.... if  you hate copycat crafts, or have known intuitively that they were no good for kids, or are intrigued by what I have to say then keep reading because....

I have come to tell you that....

Arts and crafts is NOT as beneficial as many web site experts say it is?

If you’ve read my free repot  Can Crafts for Kids Make my Kid Smarter?....How to take the win-lose theory of copycat arts and crafts and make it win-win” than you are already aware that crafts for kids is nt only NOT GOOD for kids, but that it can be downright detrimental.

Copycat crafts can  ruin children’s self esteem, stripping them of any initiative and self confidence, creating anxiety and making children into people pleasing little robots. And you don’t always see that outwardly.

Children that don’t react outwardly negatively are often suffering just as much inwardly from the adult standards and inhibitive structure. Sometimes the negative consequences don’t show up until years later.

  •      Have you ever heard of a parent or teacher who tells a little girl who had been working diligently at her picture of making a pattern of brown and beige balls around the border of her page to change the colors  because she thought  they were not bright enough?   I have.
  •         Have you ever heard of the teacher who tells her preschool assistants to fix up her students projects so that they go home perfect to the parents? I have.
  •         Have you ever spoken to adults who feel they can’t draw a straight line or are no good in art because of their early art experiences? I have. (Maybe you’re one of them)

The above scenarios as you well know are extremely damaging to your children’s self esteem and development and are quite commonplace.

“In  a good progressive classroom with with a philosopy of Montessori, Bank Street, Reggio Emilia, The Project approach, or the Waldorf approach  a teachers role isn’t to guide the children’s learning. It is to provide organization in which the child’s learning can take place. Deep concentration and absorption in activities is the hallmark of engrossed learning that  good  teachers work to promote”

Engrossed learning is one of the hallmark’s of all progressive education as opposed to “Just follow what I tell you to do “ of classic traditional education. Anyone making the switch from a conventional, traditional classroom can  see the tremendous difference in children’s concentration patterns.

Since the goal of traditional education is to get children to spit back information, copycat arts and crafts, a mainstay of traditional education accomplishes the same.

Copycat arts and crafts just produces robots.

In copycat work the children’s sit nervously and expectantly waiting  to be told what to do next, how to do it and anxiously asking for approval.  Creativity, self expression and free flowing concentration is lost as children sit there dumbly with their hands folded waiting for instruction. The complete opposite happens in an Educational Art program.

“How do I know this” you ask and why should you listen to me?

My name is Faige Kobre and I started my career in education in the typical traditional educational community which encourages traditional, copycat arts and crafts.

I hung out with traditional teachers who taught using copycat  arts and crafts, mostly to impress the parents, without giving any thought to the benefits of what they were doing. . I began my teaching career by copying what all these other teachers were doing.

Very soon, the whole process of the traditional, tedious copycat arts and crafts began to sour on me and I figured if I was bored than the kids most certainly must be.

So I started looking for other options and I stumbled across progressive education. Progressive education is different than traditional education in that in bases it’s teaching on learning how children develop and then designing curriculum to fit the children’s needs.

I took my education further and ended up with a Masters  degree in Early Childhood Education from one of the finest graduate schools in progressive education, The Bank Street College of Education.

Bank Street College, the leader in developmentally appropriate education is not just a graduate school but has a school for children as well. The school serves as a lab for the graduate students .

One of the most striking things about Bank Street School for children is that there are no crafts done at all. As one of the founding principles of progressive education is doing art that is developmentally appropriate, this means NO COPY CAT arts and crafts .

This was in direct contradiction to a majority of the schools I had come in contact with.

HOWEVER! Being a part of the traditional school system I knew that many parents and programs demanded crafts projects to send home to the parents, they would not be happy with the process only art that Bank Street does and that there had to be a way to make everyone happy.

The solution to copycat arts and crafts was not long in coming.

After teaching for many years  I became a preschool director and it was then through working with my staff that ideas started  forming in my mind to create some kind of art system for  teachers and parents who wanted to do crafts with children yet did not want to compromise their educational skills.

And I decided enough is enough!

  • Enough with children’s self-esteem getting knocked down.
  • Enough with them having no initiative.
  • Enough with them having no confidence in their abilities.
  • Enough with boring tedious copycat arts and crafts.
  • Enough with them not feeling good enough.
  • Enough with everyone’s projects looking identical.
So taking all of my trial and error  and years of experience as a teacher, director  I created my own system and called it

Educational Art ..... Art for children that is truly educational,

and as the first part of Educational Art which is supported by The Educational Art Institute I have created

I am not sure what is available out there for free but this is one of the first I’ve read that is written in a clear easy to follow way’”

 Karen Gross ,England

Your course dealing with educational arts and crafts is marvelous. All parents and educators want their children to make things. Making things that teach them creativity and improve self esteem is killing two birds with one stone”

 Denise Grunberg    Sydney , Australia

This is really a course for everybody. I’ve seen many things that were process only art that were for teachers only but this is for everybody. I love your philosophy about self esteem and art.

Chana Zuber Boston,Massachusetts

The information you have here is sorely lacking in most art books and  especially in crafts books. I think people that take on this method will take the pressure off of children to perform beyond their capabilities and ages. Id don’t care if their granny is a famous South African artist the child must do what he can at his level”

Jenna Haselton   South Africa

I feel that Faige’s enthusiasm is contagious and her approach is very passionate and it will be very helpful in giving this method over to our children. This course is a good addition to any educator or parent willing to develop the best in the child’s creative maturation.”
